Aims and objectives
We are one of around 50 pony clubs in the Pony Club Association of South Australia. The aims and objectives of our club are those of all pony clubs:
- To encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sports connected with horses and riding.
- To provide instruction in riding and horsemanship and to instil in members the proper care of their animals.
- To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self-discipline in the members.
Onkaparinga Pony Club strives to uphold these aims and objectives in all its activities.
The focus of Onkaparinga Pony Club is to provide quality instruction and fun activities in an environment where like-minded children and adults can get together to learn from each other and enjoy each other’s company. We are a friendly, family oriented club and make time to emphasise the social side of Pony Club. Our shared lunch at rallies is an example of this and some of our members rate this as the best part of the day! Our rallies are run for Pony Club members under the age of 26. Our current riding membership is around 32 riders.
Location and facilities
Our grounds are located in the picturesque Adelaide Hills on Shillabeer Road, Oakbank at the North Eastern end of the famous Oakbank Racecourse.
Our riding facilities include a 50x60m fenced all-weather arena and a 20x40m sand arena.
We also have comfortable clubrooms with kitchen facilities and a covered outdoor seating area.
Our rallies are held on the first Sunday of each month excluding January.
The majority of rallies take place at our home grounds and run from 9.45am to 3.30pm.
Home rallies are divided into four sessions with a lunch break. Two of the sessions are formal lessons where each rider receives quality instruction in flatwork and jumping, with group sizes generally a maximum of 6 riders. The other two sessions are less formal and include certificate work and fun activities like mounted games and orienteering.
In January, weather permitting, we hold a beach ride at Goolwa Beach. Our March rally is a sleepover weekend at Monarto Equestrian Centre. We also plan a trail ride at Kuitpo Forest.
Due to the generous support of the McGregor family, Onkaparinga Pony Club is very fortunate to have the use of a beautiful property “Roskhill” at Mt Torrens. Over the past 20 years an impressive cross country course for Pony Club grades 3 to 5 has been built and maintained by our club.
Using this property and our own grounds, Onkaparinga Pony Club contributes three events annually to the South Australian equestrian calendar:
- Encourage Grade 5 One Day Event. Held in February at our grounds. This event is aimed at beginner riders.
- Roskhill Cross Country Training Day. Held in March at Roskhill.
- Roskhill Horse Trials. Held over one weekend in May at Lobethal and Roskhill.
In addition to these club events, as part of the PCASA Southern Zone we are required to assist at four other zone events throughout the year.
Onkaparinga Pony Club is an organisation that relies on volunteers. The assistance of all club families is essential to enable us to provide these competition opportunities for our members and the wider equestrian community. Our club has the expectation that all of our families play their part in helping to run these events. Being involved in this way is an enjoyable and rewarding aspect of being part of Onkaparinga Pony Club.
